| Dad received his first bicycle on June 12, 1937. He ordered it from a Sears, Roebuck Catalog and it took about a week to arrive by freight train from Chicago. At that time, dad was living at 202 E. Lincolnway in Ames. (Lincoln Lodge now occupies the original site of dad's home.) A neighbor of dad's by the name of Kenny Nelson who lived at the Octagon, helped dad pick up the bike at the freight station depot which was located near Main Street and Duff Avenue. Dad told me the story of how Beverly Ferguson was connected with Bluebird. It went like this: as dad and Kenny Nelson were uncrating the bike at 202 E. Lincolnway, Dora (my dad's older sister) pulled up in her car with Beverly. When Beverly saw the bike, she exclaimed, "Oh! My birthday present!!" Beverly was 16 years old that day and my dad was 14 years old. Note: Click anywhere on the above picture to display a much higher quality image. Allow time for it to download.
